Many of us have seen recent news about the closure of Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin facility that bred beagles for research, and the rescue efforts to help these dogs find loving homes. It is wonderful news worth celebrating about resilience of these dogs and the people who spoke up for them.
As an animal advocate, I want to celebrate the lives that are finally being transformed. While reading about the rescues, I came across a photo of a beautiful beagle named Daisy with her foster family who adopted her, even after receiving a recent cancer diagnosis. Looking at the photo, Daisy looked cozy with her family, surrounded by love in a warm home, and being loved by them for years. But that wasn’t her story.
For 60 years, the facility bred thousands of beagles for research. Over the years, animal advocates, rescue organizations, journalists, and people pushed for changes.
These beagles show remarkable resilience. Many are feeling grass beneath their paws, and learning what it means to be loved. People describe them as gentle, and affectionate. They remind us that even after difficult experiences, healing is possible.
The closure of Ridglan Farms did not happen overnight. The story of the beagles shows us that persistence matters. Individual actions may seem small, but when enough people come together for a greater cause to speak up for animals that have no voice and join forces with animal organizations that came together to show that change can happen.
The rescue was also made possible through legal action. As part of a settlement with prosecutors, Ridglan Farms agreed to surrender the beagles to rescue organizations and shut down operations, bringing an end to a dark chapter in history.
Most importantly, this rescue sends a message about the future. Public awareness is growing, and people are asking questions about how animals are used in research and for more humane alternatives.
Today, the Ridglan beagles are beginning new lives. Many have been placed with rescue organizations, foster families, and adoptive homes, while others ar waiting to be loved. After years in kennels, they are receiving special care. Over 1000 beagles are placed at Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Florida. Here is the link to help these beagles find loving

My hope is that years from now, we will look back on stories like this as can inspire us. Until then, let Daisy and the thousands of other rescued beagles remind us that acts of kindness and compassion can create a better future for animals and us. ❤️
