Ryder was an elderly and frail 26 year old Standardbred NYC carriage horse who collapsed on the sweltering summer streets in Manhattan in 2022. There was a bystander who recorded a video that went viral on social media. Ryder looked very weak and was losing weight, and it is distressing to see the video as he was emancipated and a veterinarian suspected lymphoma, according to a spokeswoman for the carriage industry. This heartbreaking video of Ryderâs horrible fall is an example of extreme animal cruelty and has sparked a âcall to actionâ with horse lovers and animal activists taking a stand against this devastating tragedy and inhumane horse industry calling for a ban to horse carriages. After this terrible accident, Ryder was finally allowed to retire and live out his remaining days in peace at a farm sanctuary but sadly shortly after he arrived he collapsed and suffered a seizure and the decision was made to euthanize him on October 17th.
Ryderâs death is not only heart tearing and sad but it is a reminder that horse a carriage does not belong on the streets and this is cruelty. We can take this tragedy and Ryderâs sad life and his suffering as an opportunity for his legacy to live on and we can do something positive for horses!
