To my longtime readers, I’m so grateful you’re here. And to those who just joined this newsletter and community of animal lovers, advocates, and activists welcome!
I’m Suzana Gartner, animal advocate, author of A Voice for Animals, and animal rights lawyer. During my recent book tour across Ontario at Indigo bookstores, I met many lovely people that were kind enough to stop by my table and say hello. I heard many heartwarming stories of animal companions and furry family members that touched their hearts.
It’s been fuel for my commitment to continue to speak up for animals so I would like to thank each one of you for showing that you care. Also, I met a little friendly poodle named Ginger at the London Indigo store.
She was part of a collaboration with the local rescue, SALT. Ginger was a show stopper. She literally greeted almost every passerby with a wagging tail and an open heart that made people smile. She brightened their days and made my book signing event more enjoyable. Ginger wore a yellow vest that said, “ADOPT ME.” Many admired her, but no one adopted her. Now she’s a cherished member of our family and a calming presence for our other dog.
Her story stayed with me even when the kind ladies from SALT came to pick up Ginger. I learned that she had lost her human guardian to cancer and was surrendered to the rescue. She had been residing at a dog boarding kennel for two years and was waiting for a home. Ginger is a senior dog, almost 8 years old, and although she looks like a puppy, her age was an issue for some people and sadly, older dogs and cats get overlooked for adoption. But I would like to share my experience interacting with older shelter animals is a beautiful experience and can be easier to manage and provide a loving home as they can be calmer and easygoing.
I waited a couple of weeks to call back the rescue and find out about Ginger, hoping someone applied to adopt her. I told my husband that if no one had submitted an application, we should. He agreed and that’s how Ginger joined our rescue crew. She’s made our lives so much better.
In honour of National Love Your Pet Day (Feb 20), Ginger’s story is a powerful reminder that the love of animals: whether it’s adopting, rescuing, or even cherishing the furry family members in our lives makes a difference. Even small acts of kindness can change a life.
I’d love to hear from you: have you welcomed an animal companion into your life, or performed a small act of kindness for an animal? Please share your story and it could inspire others!
