November is a month dedicated to raising awareness on senior dogs in need of a loving home. Senior dogs can be loving companions and don’t require as much training. Sadly, they are at a much higher risk of losing their lives in shelters as they tend to wait longer and are often overlooked by adopters. You can make a difference by enriching your life with a companion friend and save a precious life! Senior dogs have the greatest difficulty in finding a loving home. In fact, “senior pets are often the last to be adopted from shelters, putting them at an increased risk for euthanasia”.[1] This is due to the misconception that senior dogs and cats require more commitment. This could not be further from the truth! In fact, much less work is involved when bringing home an older pet. Lysa Boston, the shelter manager at the Joplin Humane Society in Missouri, told KOAM-TV that “people need to consider senior pets” and that “young animals need a lot more patience, energy, and consistent training to help them become well-adjusted to the family”.[2] Bringing home an older dog can be very beneficial.

There are many benefits to bringing home a senior dog. The older the dog, the calmer and more mature they behave.[3] With a calm personality, adjusting to a new home is easier. Also, older dogs are already trained; and, even if your adopted dog does not know a particular trick you want them to know, you can always train them! Against the common misconception, you can in fact train an old dog new tricks! Another benefit to bringing home an older dog is that from the moment you meet them for the first time, you know how they will behave. In other words, you see what you get! Older dogs tend to be more socialized and as a result they are more social with the family and are very friendly!
