As you have likely seen on the news and social media, the damaging effects of Hurricane Harvey in Texas are absolutely devastating. The hurricane has caused immense destruction, with the city of Houston having taken the worst damage in the storm. Regrettably, it’s not just the people who were left affected by the Hurricane — many family pets and animals were also left behind. As these animals are unable to fend for themselves, it’s heart-warming to see the great coverage of the rescue efforts of people and organizations.
In natural disasters, animals are helpless and can’t call for help. It’s up to the goodwill and bravery of the public to help out. Organizations such as the Houston Humane Society, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas, The San Antonio Humane Society, and Austin Pets Alive, have been mobilizing to rescue animals, find their owners, or find families to adopt them. If you are able to donate – links will be provided at the bottom of this post! In addition to Houston residents and organizations pitching in to rescue animals, there have been many people from our home base of Toronto that went to Houston to help with animal rescue — very happy to see!
Other notable rescues include Austin Pets Alive that arranged to have 69 dogs and cats flown to safety over the long weekend; the Houston SPCA who have rescued over 200 animals; MaxFund Dog Adoption Center who drove 15 hours to rescue dogs. It’s an inspiration to see everyone pitching in to do their part!
There are still many animals that are in need of help! I implore everyone who is capable of offering a donation to do so.
